Mine seems to engage the starter overrunning clutch on shut down occasionally. No metalic sound however. ALso if the starter has to crank against higher compression than expected (ie the decompresion solenoid isn't adjusted or working correctly it will stress the starter. There are 2 timer circuits in the starting electrical portion. Delays starter until the solenoid is worked and then releases it after the engine has spun enough to have some inertia. There is not a good diagram of the starter gears assemmbly in the manual. but it does describe the cleaning, and reassembly of the one-way clutch.
